State Horticultural Association of Pennsylvania (SHAP) and
Scott Brown Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship availability is for students who intend to pursue careers in the Pennsylvania fruit industry. Scholarship applicants must maintain full time enrollment in an undergraduate program at a university, college, community college or trade or technical school. Scholarships are open to high school seniors and students currently enrolled in a degree program.
The scholarship is worth up to $4,000 per year. The amount of the award will be determined at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee. Scholarship recipients may reapply annually for the scholarship.
Payment of the scholarship will be made directly to the institution of higher learning upon receipt of proof of enrollment.
To the Applicant: Please fill out the application as completely as possible. Applications must be submitted no later than May 1st. The information you provide will be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee, which may request to interview you in person or contact your college or high school advisor. You will be notified of a decision by June 15th of the current year.
Accompanying the application please attach:
□ A copy of your most recent academic transcript.
□ Two letters of reference from someone outside of your immediate family.
□ A typed essay (approximately 500 words) on the following topic: Describe your previous experiences with the fruit industry (if any) and your vision for the role you hope to play in the Pennsylvania fruit industry upon graduation.
Please note that this is not a need based scholarship.
SHAP strongly encourages students who accept a scholarship to volunteer to help out with either the Young Growers Alliance or State Horticultural Association of Pennsylvania food booths at the PA Farm Show in January.
